50 Things to do in Port Alfred
There's so much to do you'll need to stop a while! The best things in life and free and if you just take the time to look around at what Port Alfred offers, you'll find this really is true. This list takes you to our neighbours and friends as well.

- Take a stroll around the town of Port Alfred. Collect a free booklet from the tourism office and enjoy a most unusual meander. It's a great way to relax.
- Watch the sunset over the town from the pier on the West Bank and have a drink in the nearest pub.
- Catch some fish off the pier or river banks. Or hire a small boat and cast your rod up river. You can also get up at crack of dawn and book a ride with one of the fishing boats that go out to sea.
- Go on horseback over the dunes and along the beach. Or get up close to some big game on a riding safari.
- Take a swim in the rock pools or in the sea or there is an indoor heated pool if the waves are intimidating.
- Take a stroll along our endless, pristine beaches. Kelly's Beach has Blue Flag status.
- Play tennis at the municipal tennis courts behind the Civic Centre.
- Go diving and indulge in some extreme adventures.
- Play golf at the famous Royal Port Alfred course.
- Take a trip out to sea with the NSRI.
- Play bowls and croquet.

- Take a tour of the river with one of our numerous river guides.
- Pop into one of our many art and craft production facilities and see real artisits at work.
- Rent a mountain bike and test your power on the hills.
- Go dune boarding on the beaches.
- Surf, windsurf or sail out to sea.
- Water ski up the Kowie River.
- Picnic on the river bank and watch the various water birds fishing for a meal.
- Explore the antique and junk shops around the town. There are at least 4 quality antique stores worth a visit.
- Indulge your taste buds by visiting our local Home Industry shop.
- If you are a walker, grab some pamphlets from the tourism office and go and explore.
- Visit the Historical Settlers Church on the East Bank and the Settler graves in the cemeteries.
- Enjoy a challenging 4x4 trail just a couple of kilometres out of town.
- Visit the lovely flower nurseries in and around town.
- Call Anne Williams and book a “birding trip”.
- Book game drives at the tourism office. There are several reserves offering the Big Five within an hour's drive.
- Go shopping. As Port Alfred grows there is a far wider variety of shopping on offer. From large retailers to small junk shops. It is all available here.
- Have a drink and chat with the locals at one of the pubs in Wharf Street or experience fine dining at one of the excellent restaurants in town.
- Solve the problems of the whole world.
- Meander down Van der Riet Street for a truly local shopping experience. Snazzy clothing, unusual gifts, fresh flowers, antiques, bric-a-brac, deli delights, coffee, cake, lunch, seafood, home decor, rugs, property, upholstery, professionals and a whole lot more.
- Loads of internet cafes to get connected.
- Buy a historical map of the heritage sites & explore.
- Try the various spas & hydros.
- Have your hair done. There are half a dozen excellent salons to choose from. Again catch up on all local goings-on.
- Hire some videos or DVDs if the weather turns nasty (doesn't happen often).
- Try fresh fish & chips from The Fish Shop in Wharf Street or stroll a little further along the street and pop into The Harbour Master for freshly brewed lager and scampi.
- Canoe up the Kowie. It is worth the day trip.
- Hire a boat and explore the Kowie.
- Buy a sand-board and go for it down the magical dunes at East Beach
- Visit the Kowie History Museum.
- Try our public library. Sometimes there's also an art exhibition on the go.
- Hunt for great second-hand books from local book dealers.
- Visit the art galleries in town. A wonderful selection of original art and pottery.
- Take a stroll along the wooden boardwalk at the Duck Pond and stop off at one of the fabulous restaurants for lunch.
- Buy a copy of the local newspaper Talk of The Town. It's a fascinating read about the town's goings on. There's also The Kowie Bugle - a free paper that comes out every Thursday. Be quick as copies are snapped up fast.
- Scour the many estate agencies for properties.
- Drop in at the Kowie Museum. Well worth the visit.
